Enough with blocked appointments! Tell your Democratic Senator to re-open filibuster reform
Obstructionist Senate Republicans are at it again. Having successfully warded off filibuster reform in January, they have now bottled up the confirmation of Richard Cordray for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Thomas Perez for Secretary of Labor, and Gina McCarthy for the Environmental Protection Agency.
As the New York Times reports this week, Senate Democrats are "increasingly exasperated" by routine efforts to block nominees and are "now more supportive than ever" of re-opening filibuster reform.
As you read this, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is even polling Senate Democrats to see if there are enough votes to pull it off.
Please, use the form below send an email to your Democratic member(s) of the U.S. Senate telling them to re-open filibuster reform so that we can have a functioning Senate that confirms nominations in a timely manner. (email can be personalized) -
Stand with the Democratic women of the Senate who are taking on sexual assault in the military
More and more women in the military are coming forward with horrific reports of sexual assault by their superiors. Not long ago, little would have happened, but with a record number of women serving in the United States Senate, including five Democratic women on the Armed Services Committee, now there are leaders making real noise and taking real action.
Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) has mobilized her campaign operation and is holding up the high-level nomination of a senior Air Force officer who overturned a jury conviction in a sexual assault case last year.
Meanwhile, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is taking the lead on passing legislation that will prevent military commanders from handling sexual assault cases that involve their subordinates.
Please join Daily Kos and EMILY’s List by signing our petition standing with the Democratic women of the Senate who are fighting to change the way the military handles sexual assault. -
Tell the Florida Legislature: Don’t deny healthcare to one-million poor people while giving yourselves a sweetheart deal
Last month, the Republican Florida state legislature denied billions of federal dollars provided by Obamacare that would have expanded Medicaid to nearly one million poor, uninsured residents of the Sunshine State.
But meanwhile, Florida House members have no problem offering themselves a first-class, state-subsidized health insurance plan -- where they pay premiums as low as $8.34 per month.
Clearly, they oppose “government-funded health care” if it applies to their uninsured, low-income constituents -- while socialized medicine is fine for politicians in Tallahassee.
Sign the petition demanding that the Florida state legislature, which voted to give itself first-rate, state-subsidized health insurance, stop denying Medicaid to nearly one million low-income, uninsured Floridians. -
Tell your governor: Don't make buying a Tesla illegal
Tesla has just introduced the most amazing electric vehicle into the market. Unfortunately, buying it could soon be illegal in some states around the country.
Sleazy car dealerships have lobbied for, and in some states already managed to pass, laws that forbid car manufacturers from selling vehicles directly to consumers. Since Tesla eschews auto dealerships and only sells its cars directly to consumers via “galleries” and online orders, these laws will make it impossible to buy a Tesla in some states.
Stupid laws like these protect only the interests of a few car salesmen while creating unnecessary barriers to entry for disruptive technologies with better business models, like the Tesla. We need to stop these laws before they start spreading.
Use the form below to send an email to your Governor to opposing any law that would require Tesla, or any car manufacturer, to go through auto dealers in order to sell their vehicles. -
Tell John Boehner: Remove Michele Bachmann from the House Intelligence Committee
Representative Michele Bachmann is the Tea Party’s queen of crazy. So what kind of a signal does it send that she's on the House Intelligence Committee where she has access to sensitive national security information?
Bachmann has actually said that gay marriage is the biggest problem facing the nation, financial reform efforts equate with Mussolini-style fascism, and that President Obama is "anti-American" and "turning our country into a nation of slaves.”
One of Bachmann’s most irresponsible actions was to launch an anti-Muslim witch hunt and suggest, à la Joe McCarthy, that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated the American government.
Her loose association with the facts and her willingness to believe in all sorts of completely baseless conspiracy theories makes her one of the last people in Congress who should be entrusted with our nation’s secrets.
Please join with Daily Kos and CREDO by petitioning Speaker Boehner to remove Rep. Michele Bachmann from the House Intelligence Committee. -
Tell Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan: Pass marriage equality now
Yesterday, Minnesota made history when Gov. Mark Dayton signed marriage equality legislation into law. Minnesota is the 12th state to pass freedom to marry for all loving couples, and the third state to do so in just the last two weeks.
But in Illinois, our marriage bill has languished. It passed the Illinois Senate in February, but has not come to a vote in the Illinois House even with Gov. Pat Quinn pledging to sign it after both houses of the legislature pass it. The Illinois General Assembly must act before May 31st, or the bill will die due to lack of action.
It is well past time for the Land of Lincoln to be on the right side of history.
Please sign our petition to Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan demanding that he secure the support to pass the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act and bring it to a vote before the May 31 deadline. -
Tell the IRS: It was wrong to single out tea party groups. Give extra scrutiny to *all* secret money organizations instead.
The IRS is deservedly facing a lot of heat right now because it appears to have discriminated against tea party-affiliated groups that were applying for tax-exempt, 501(c)4 status as "social welfare" organizations.
A very real danger from this scandal is that the IRS will basically stop applying scrutiny to every group that applies for tax-exempt 501(c)4 status. This would be awful, because after the Citizens’ United ruling there is no doubt that huge amounts of secret money is being funneled through tax-exempt 501(c)4 organizations for the primary purpose of electioneering, not social welfare.
Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater here. Please sign our petition telling the IRS that it was wrong to single out tea party groups, because they should be applying extra scrutiny to *all* tax-exempt, secret money organizations. -

Tell the IRS to investigate and prosecute offshore tax evasion
Recently, the IRS and its counterparts in the European Union and Australia gained access to 400 gigabytes of leaked data acquired by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. This data exposes potential tax evasion by individuals, companies, and private trusts through the use of offshore tax havens. These governmental agencies are beginning to sift through the data and pursue possible illegal activity.
This is exactly the type of work the IRS should be focusing on, and international coordination of this sort could be a game changer when it comes to cracking down on those who dodge their tax bills by hiding money around in secret accounts around the globe.
Amidst allegations of politically motivated investigations into conservative organizations, this story will probably be overshadowed. Let’s make sure that doesn't happen, and that the IRS doesn’t get cold feet in the pursuit of these enormous leads.
Please sign our petition urging the IRS to investigate the use of offshore tax havens for possible tax evasion and prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law. -
Tell Democratic leaders: Don't give in to Republican hostage taking on the debt limit
Once again, congressional Republicans are saying they will only raise the debt limit if congressional Democrats and President Obama agree to a long list of ransom demands.
Enough with this hostage taking. Enough with Republicans holding a gun to the head of the American economy. Republicans in Congress incurred these bills, and they do not get to extort demands in exchange for paying them.
Please sign the petition to President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi telling them not to give in to Republican debt limit extortion. -
Tell Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
Right now, because there is no federal law barring employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, you can be fired for being gay in 28 states.
It is time to change that by passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would finally make job discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity illegal.
ENDA has been introduced to Congress nine times since 1994 without success, but now the winds of change are on our side. In April, it was re-introduced with bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.
Please join Daily Kos and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee by signing the petition urging Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and finally give the LGBTQ community equal rights in the workplace. -
Tell the Senate to give students the same low interest rates the big banks get
Sen. Elizabeth Warren has a great, simple idea, and she's made it her first bill. Give students the same loan rates that the big banks get:
"Right now, a big bank can get a loan through the Federal Reserve discount window at a rate of about 0.75%. But this summer a student who is trying to get a loan to go to college will pay almost 7%. In other words, the federal government is going to charge students interest rates that are nine times higher than the rates for the biggest banks–the same banks that destroyed millions of jobs and nearly broke this economy. That isn’t right."
Students should get as good a deal as the banks. Students are the ones that are going to be responsible for rebuilding this country, and they shouldn't be saddled with crippling debt before they even get a chance to start doing that.
Please join with Daily Kos and CREDO by signing the petition urging all U.S. senators to support the Bank On Student Loan Fairness Act. -

Tell Congress: Stop subsidizing CEO salaries
The Institute for Policy Studies and Campaign for America's Future have released a new report revealing how the same CEOs who want to cut spending on social programs are enjoying enormous, taxpayer-funded subsidies to their salaries.
There is a tax deduction for "performance pay" that allows CEOs and other top executives to pocket gobs of money without paying taxes on it. To get a sense of just how much this loophole is costing us, consider that the 90 publicly-held corporations on pro-austerity "Fix the Debt" coalition gave out $6.3 billion in tax-deductible "performance pay" from 2009-2011, thereby increasing the debt and subsidizing executive pay by between $953 million and $1.6 billion.
Of course, these CEOs and executives wouldn't call this a tax subsidy. But because they get this little perk and you don't, what else should it be called? We could just go for the simple: rip-off.
Sign the petition from Daily Kos and Campaign for America's Future calling on Congress to stop subsidizing CEO salaries by ending the performance pay loophole. -
Now 13 states have called for Citizens United to be overturned. Tell the other 37 to join in!
Maine has become the 13th state to call for a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s infamous ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. The vote wasn't even close, as large numbers of Republicans joining every Democrat in both the Maine state House and state Senate.
Maine joins West Virginia, Colorado, Montana, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, Rhode Island, Maryland, Vermont, New Mexico and Hawaii in calling for a Constitutional amendment.
This a grassroots movement with both momentum and bipartisan support. Outside of the U.S. Congress and the Supreme Court, Republicans hate corporate spending in campaigns almost as much as Democrats, and want to see reform. A Constitutional amendment is not an easy thing to achieve, but the time is right for this one.
Sign the petition urging the remaining 37 state governments to call for a Constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United. -
Tell Republicans: Ending overtime pay is unacceptable
In a shocking new salvo in their war on workers, House Republicans have passed a bill that repeals mandatory overtime pay.
Yes, you read that right. House Republicans have decided that hourly workers have it too cushy when they receive extra money for working extended hours. So, this week they passed the so-called "Working Families Flexibility Act," which gives business owners the flexibility of not paying hourly workers a higher hourly rate for overtime work.
Doing that would take money out of the pockets of every full-time hourly employee in the country, and put that same money in pockets of business owners.
Please sign the petition from Daily Kos and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee opposing the end of mandatory overtime pay, and shaming House Republicans for passing this terrible bill. -
Run, Sarah, run: Help Democrats by urging Sarah Palin to run for U.S. Senate in Alaska
Reports from Alaska indicate at least one tea party group is attempting to draft Sarah Palin to run against Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Begich in 2014.
And come to think of it, that actually sounds like a great idea!
Palin commonly makes gaffes, quit the Alaska governorship without even finishing one term, failed at her vice-presidential bid, her reality TV series was cancelled, and she was fired from her spot as a contributor on Fox News. With a track record like that, we feel pretty confident Sen. Mark Begich would be able to win re-election next year.
So yeah, run, Sarah, run. Please sign our petition encouraging Sarah Palin to run for U.S. Senate in Alaska in 2014. -
Call on Congress to act on gun violence
The families of gun violence have suffered too much for lawmakers to sit back and do nothing.
An overwhelming 90% of Americans support background checks for gun sales—but a minority of senators refused to listen to the people who elected them, and voted to block the bill.

Thank the LA Times staffers who said they will quit if the Koch Brothers buy the newspaper
Right-wing super villains Charles and David Koch are looking to purchase media outlets in order create new mouthpieces for their propaganda. Staffers of the Los Angeles Times, one of the media outlets targeted by the Koch brothers, are not taking this lying down.
Two weeks ago, at an in-house awards ceremony for Los Angeles Times staff, columnist Steve Lopez asked everyone in attendance, "Raise your hand if you would quit if the paper was bought by the Koch brothers."
About half the staff raised their hands, perhaps dooming the sale of the newspaper to the Kochs.
Please join with Daily Kos and Working Families by signing our petition supporting the journalists and staff at the Los Angeles Times who are willing to quit their jobs if Charles and David Koch purchase the newspaper. -

Tell Congress to fix the entire sequester, not just the parts that annoy rich people
Congress has done nothing as services that protect the most vulnerable populations, like Meals on Wheels and Head Start, are being slashed because the sequester.
However, Congress has moved to urgently repeal one part of the sequester that inconveniences wealthier Americans. Last Friday, in order to prevent significant delays in air travel, they overwhelmingly passed a bill that ended furloughs at the Federal Aviation Administration.

Tell Rick Perry: Your 'pro-business environment' helped cause the disaster in West, Texas
Since the deadly West, Texas, fertilizer plant explosion two weeks ago, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has said there is no reason to increase inspections at businesses storing dangerous chemicals. Additionally, he has traveled to other states trying to lure business to Texas, using lax regulations and a "pro-business environment" as a selling point.
Now, Rick Perry has expressed outrage at an editorial cartoon linking Texas's "pro-business environment" to the explosion.

Tell the SEC: Require corporations to disclose political donations to shareholders
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is considering passing a rule that would require publicly traded corporations to disclose all of their political donations to shareholders.

Support federal disaster aid for Texas, and tell Texas Republicans to stop opposing it when other parts of the country are in need
In the wake of the horrific fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, it is imperative that federal disaster aid immediately be sent to help the affected families and communities. That's why it is important to stand with Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in his call to "ensure that all available resources are marshaled to deal with the horrific loss of life and suffering that we’ve seen."
However, it would be nice if, in the future, Texas Republicans like Sen. Cruz and his colleague Sen. John Cornyn would support federal disaster relief when other parts of the country are in need. Earlier this year, both Texas senators voted against federal relief for areas impacted by Superstorm Sandy. So did Bill Flores, the Republican who represents West, Texas in the U.S. House.
Sign the petition both supporting immediate federal disaster aid for Texas and also urging Texas Republicans to start supporting federal disaster aid when other parts of the country are in need. -
Tell the Senate to reject the House Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act
The House of Representatives has passed passed their Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), the same bad bill they passed last year.
Last year, President Obama threatened to veto the bill. This year, President Obama has threatened to veto the bill. That’s because it still gives private companies complete immunity for sharing customer information with the government, including the military or the NSA, without removing personally identifiable information.
CISPA as written by the House would trump all other privacy laws, all of the other protections the government has established for keeping personally identifiable and sensitive data—financial records, medical records, communication—private. Companies could share any and all of your information with the government in the name of national security, and there's nothing you could do about it.
It was a bad bill last year, and it's a bad bill now. Please use the form below to email your senators and tell them to scrap CISPA. (email is editable) -
Tell the Senate: Require background checks for firearm sales at gun shows
UPDATE:The Manchin-Toomey amendment was just defeated in the Senate. Even though the was vote 54 in favor and 46 opposed, it couldn't reach the 60 vote threshold to overcome a filibuster.
Please email your Democratic Senators now, asking them to re-open filibuster reform to bring back a functioning Senate. Click here to email them about the filibuster.
After three months of negotiations, a bipartisan bill has been drafted that would require criminal and mental health background checks for anyone purchasing a firearm at a gun show or on the internet.
The vote is expected on Wednesday afternoon, April 17. And it's going to be close.
Please, use the form below to join with Daily Kos and Americans for Responsible Solutions by emailing your senators and telling them to vote for expanded background checks. -
Tell Democratic Party committees: Protect seniors instead of whining about talking points
Stepping on the third rail of politics, President Barack Obama introduced a budget that makes cuts to Social Security. Republicans, sensing a golden political opportunity, are now attacking Democrats for promoting Social Security cuts.
Unfortunately, the response to these attacks from Democratic Party committees has been either to whine that Republicans supported cutting Social Security first (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee), or to just endorse President Obama's budget, Social Security cuts and all (Democratic Governor's Association).
Sign the petition telling Democratic Party committees to stop supporting chained CPI and other cuts to Social Security. The best way to protect our seniors and to deflect Republican attacks is to reject any cuts to Social Security, no matter who proposed those cuts. -
Tell Ken Cuccinelli: Stop Trying to Shut Down Abortion Providers
Two years ago, Cuccinelli issued a legal opinion that's forcing the Board of Health to make abortion providers comply with hospital regulations. They waited as long as they could, but tomorrow the Board of Health has to make their ruling.
And unless Cuccinelli backs off, they have no choice — they'll have to enact the new regulations and possibly shut down abortion clinics. Physicians across the Commonwealth have come out against these regulations, which involve things like the width of hallways and heating and ventilation systems, are medically unnecessary. Doctors say these restrictions do nothing to protect women’s health.
This isn't an isolated incident. Throughout his career Cuccinelli has made countless attempts to restrict women's health access.
Add your name to the petition from Terry McAuliffe for Governor, and tell Ken Cuccinelli: Let women make their own health care decisions with their doctors, and without government interference. -
Stand against Ken Cuccinelli
As attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli supported LGBT discrimination and attacked climate science. The Washington Post called him "the most overtly partisan attorney general in Virginia's history" after he used his office to threaten women's health providers. He even thinks Justice Antonin Scalia is too liberal.
Now, he wants to be governor of Virginia.
Don't let that happen. Please, sign the petition from Daily Kos and Terry McAuliffe pledging to stop Ken Cuccinelli. -
Tell the Virginia Board of Health: Stand up to Ken Cuccinelli
In 2010, Virginia legislators passed a bill with onerous new regulations that were designed to close all Virginia health clinics that provide abortions. Initially, the Virginia Board of Health exempted existing clinics from the new regulations, meaning that they would be able to keep their doors open without making renovations that would cost $1,000,000 or more.
However, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli refused to certify the board’s decision. He threatened to withhold the state’s legal counsel from the Virginia Board of Health, thus opening the individual members of the board up to litigation they would have to pay for our of their own pockets.
Now, after months of stalling, at a meeting on April 12 the Board of Health has to issue a final ruling on whether or not the new regulations will apply to all health clinics in the state.
Please email the Virginia Board of Health to stand up to Ken Cuccinelli and vote against new regulations that were designed to close all health clinics that offers abortions. Use the form below to send an email to the Virginia Board of Health before the final vote. -
Tell Democratic senators: Urge Majority Leader Reid to re-open filibuster reform
With obstructionist Senate Republicans filibustering anything short of renaming a post office, it is time for Senate Democrats to bring democracy into their chamber.
Over 125,000 members of the Daily Kos community signed a petition urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to reform the filibuster, but he told us that "time will tell" whether half-measure reforms negotiated earlier this year with the GOP "were sufficient enough."
We don’t know whether he’s afraid of change, or whether he likes dysfunctional government, but it’s time to ratchet up the pressure.
Please, use the form below send an email to your Democratic member(s) of the U.S. Senate telling them to re-open filibuster reform so that we can have a functioning Senate that passes legislation and confirms nominations in a timely manner. -
Tell the Senate: Don't filibuster universal background checks
A growing gang of Republican senators, including Republican minority leader Mitch McConnell, have vowed to filibuster any new gun safety legislation.

Tell Congress to crack down on the $32 trillion hidden in offshore tax havens
With the 2013 tax deadline looming, new documents have leaked showing that there is an estimated $32 trillion dollars hiding away in offshore tax havens. Yes, $32 trillion.
While millions of Americans are working hard to file their taxes, and while Head Start programs and cancer treatment centers are being shut down because of the sequester, this is just another example of how the wealthy are becoming egregiously rich at the expense of everyone else.
Please, sign our petition urging Congress and President Obama to take action to crack down on offshore tax havens. -

Demand full media access to the Arkansas pipeline spill site
Right now, there is a major oil spill clean-up happening in Mayflower, Arkansas. Over 12,000 barrels of oil have surfaced from a leak in an Exxon Mobil pipeline carrying tar sands oil from Canada, very similar to the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
In addition to the unfolding environmental tragedy, media have had difficulties accessing information on the cleanup effort. One of the reasons for this is likely because access largely runs through Exxon Mobil employees who have a vested interest in keeping the media out of the loop.
The public and media deserve access to this oil spill. Please sign the petition to Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Acting Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Bob Perciasepe demanding transparency and independence in media access to the Mayflower spill site. We will deliver the signatures to their offices. -
Tell the Justice Department to stop North Carolina's latest voter suppression legislation.
North Carolina Republicans have a new plan to suppress the college vote: If students register to vote where they go to school rather than where their parents live, their parents lose a college tax credit. Republicans are forcing this choice–either register in your home county or cost your parents $2500–all to keep this Democratic-leaning group of voters from turning out on election day.
North Carolina’s history of voter suppression puts it under the jurisdiction of the US Justice Department which can, under section 5 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, invalidate laws that have voter suppression effects. Please sign the petition urging the US Justice Department to invalidate this legislation immediately so that college students can vote where they choose without costing their families much-needed tax relief. -
Tell the Democratic Party to endorse the next big societal shift: marijuana legalization
Marriage equality has passed a tipping point, as it is backed by strong majorities of the public and virtually every Democratic politician. Now, it’s time for the Democratic Party to endorse another ongoing societal shift: marijuana legalization.
A decade ago, Americans opposed marijuana legalization by 2-1 margins. Now public opinion is not only evenly split, but is guaranteed to continue tilting toward legalization. This is because, as with marriage equality, overwhelming majorities of young Americans are in favor.
Marijuana decriminalization has already taken place in two states, but legalization needs to happen everywhere. It will reduce spending on the criminal justice system, lower out-of-control incarceration rates, raise revenues through taxation, and protect personal freedom.
Please sign our petition to the Democratic National Committee demanding the inclusion of federal marijuana legalization in their 2016 platform. The time has come. -
Tell Congress to raise the minimum wage and tie it to inflation
In 1968, the minimum wage was worth over $10.00 in 2012 dollars. Today, it’s $7.25. It hasn’t gone up since 2009, and working full-time at minimum wage isn’t enough to put a family of two above the poverty line. It’s time for that to change.
Sen. Tom Harkin and Rep. George Miller are calling on Congress to increase the minimum wage to $10.10, close to what it was worth in 1968,
and tie it to inflation so that minimum-wage workers don’t have to wait years for a raise while the prices of food and rent keep rising.
Join with Daily Kos and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee by signing our petition telling Congress to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 and tie it to inflation. -
Tell Harry Reid to force repeated votes on expanded background checks
Even after Virginia Tech, Tucson, Aurora, and Sandy Hook, expanded background checks for firearm sales were just filibustered in the Senate.
We don't have to settle for this. In 2010, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid forced repeated votes on the financial reform bill until Republicans grew weary of headlines about how they doing the bidding of Wall Street. After three days of votes, opponents of the financial reform bill relented and the filibuster was defeated.
With 91% of Americans supporting universal background checks, the same tactic of public embarrassment could work again.
Please tell Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to hold repeated votes on expanded background checks for firearm sales until opponents relent and their filibuster is defeated. -
Tell the final Democratic holdouts to support universal background checks
Over 90% of Americans support requiring universal background checks for gun sales, and so 100% of Democrats in Congress should support it, too.
However, as we approach the big Senate vote universal background checks, there are still four Democratic senators who have not yet announced their support: Mark Begich of Alaska, Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota.
Please, if you are a resident of one of these four states, send an email to your Democratic U.S. senator, telling him or her to support universal background checks for all gun sales. (Email can be edited and personalized) -
Thank you, Edith Windsor, for challenging the Defense of Marriage Act
When Thea and I met nearly 50 years ago, we never could have dreamed that the story of our life together would be before the Supreme Court as an example of why gay married couples should be treated equally, and not like second-class citizens. While Thea is no longer alive, I know how proud she would have been to see this day. The truth is, I never expected any less from my country. -DOMA litigant Edith Windsor

San Francisco Regional Water Board: For the porpoises and for the Bay, stop the polluters
More than 70 years after porpoises originally fled the waters of the San Francisco Bay, they are beginning to come back. Their return is a sign that the waters of the Bay are cleaner and once again liveable.
The only way to keep the porpoises here is to keep pollution out -- and that means getting the San Francisco Regional Water Board to stand up to polluters.
Please join with Daily Kos and our partners at For the Bay by signing this petition to the San Francisco Regional Water Board urging them to stand up to the worst polluters for the sake of the returning porpoise population. -
Join Bernie Sanders in opposing cuts to Social Security and disabled vets
Last week, U.S. senator and progressive powerhouse Bernie Sanders succeeded in getting the Senate on record opposing cuts to Social Security and veterans' benefits through the use of chained CPI.
Chained CPI is a sneaky way to cut Social Security and veterans' benefits by reducing the rate at which those benefits grow compared to inflation. Over time, it would result in Social Security and veterans' benefits being reduced by several thousand dollars every year.
During last week's debate on the federal budget, the Sanders amendment opposing the use of chained CPI passed on a voice vote without a single senator speaking up to object. While the amendment is non-binding, it's still significant because an entire branch of Congress is now on record opposing these backdoor cuts to Social Security and veterans' benefits.
Passing this amendment is a step forward, but we have a lot more work to do. Please join Daily Kos and Sen. Bernie Sanders in demanding that the White House and House of Representatives say NO to benefit cuts for Social Security recipients and disabled vets. -
Support President Obama's call for comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship
President Obama has called on Congress to address immigration reform, and with the announcement of a bipartisan framework in the Senate, it’s clear that comprehensive immigration reform is finally within reach.
As we move forward, we need to make sure the new policy is rooted in the American Dream by articulating a clear path to citizenship for millions of hard-working immigrants and their children.
Please sign our petition supporting President Obama's call for comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship. We will send the signatures to the White House. -
Tell the Senate: Pass universal background checks now
All members of the United States military must pass extensive background checks in order to carry assault weapons. Why should regular civilians be exempt from this safety measure?
That’s why our partners at VoteVets are putting together a new campaign to pressure a few key senators to support universal background checks before the big Senate vote on gun safety next month. The senators who will decide the fate of universal background checks need to know there will be consequences come election time if they defy the will, and the safety, of the American people.
Please join with Daily Kos and VoteVets by signing the petition telling your senators to support universal background checks. -
Tell the NRA: Stop calling residents of Newtown
The ghouls at the NRA are targeting the residents of Newtown, CT with a barrage of robocalls urging them to oppose gun safety legislation, including background checks and registration, barely three months after 20 children and six educators were gunned down in their school.
Please use the form below to send the NRA an email blasting them for their total lack of respect for the victims of the weapons they peddle (sample email can be edited and personalized). Or, call the NRA’s national headquarters at 1-800-672-3888. Let’s give the NRA a piece of our minds about their shameful behavior. -
Thank you, Hillary Clinton, for speaking out
Last week, Hillary Clinton announced her support for marriage equality for lesbian and gay couples everywhere. As a former first lady, Senator, and Secretary of State, Hillary’s voice is a powerful one, and we thank her for her courage and leadership in standing behind same sex couples and their families.
Join Daily Kos and our Partners at EMILY's List by signing our “thank you” card to Hillary Clinton for making her voice heard. -
Stop the Koch brothers from purchasing the Los Angeles Times and other media outlets
Right-wing super villains Charles and David Koch have reportedly expressed interest in purchasing some or all of the holdings of the Tribune Company, which owns newspaper and television stations across the country, including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.
Millions of people count on their local newspapers and television stations for strong and unbiased reporting, including their endorsements for political candidates and ballot initiatives. It would be a travesty to the fourth estate if the Koch brothers purchase respected media outlets in order to peddle their discredited ideas and right-wing propaganda.
Please sign our petition to Peter Liguori, President of The Tribune Company, urging him not to sell the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, and other Tribune media properties to Charles and David Koch. -
Tell Congress: Restore scholarships for children of fallen Iraq and Afghanistan veterans
With the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War upon us, the children of troops who died fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan are facing yet another hardship. Now, because of federal budget cuts forced by the sequester, many of them will lose thousands of dollars in college scholarship money that is awarded through the Iraq and Afghanistan War Grant program.
That program must be more of the government waste and evil socialism we keep hearing about.
Please sign the petition telling Congress to reinstate the Iraq and Afghanistan War Grant program so that the sons and daughters of fallen soldiers will have access to higher education. -
Tell the Supreme Court: It's time for marriage equality
In the next few days, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8.
You don't have to be a legal scholar to know that the Supreme Court should not be upholding unconstitutional laws that keep people from marrying who they love. That is why thousands of people have filed opinions with the Supreme Court, both official and unofficial, telling them that the time for marriage equality has come.
Before the Supreme Court begins deliberation on the the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8, please join with Daily Kos and the DSCC in telling the Supreme Court that bans on marriage equality are unconstitutional and all Americans should have the right to marry who they love. -
Urge the President to veto CISPA
Last year, the President Obama's administration threatened to veto the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) because it would create major privacy and security vulnerabilities. In the veto threat, the President Obama's administration said:“The sharing of information must be conducted in a manner that preserves Americans' privacy, data confidentiality, and civil liberties and recognizes the civilian nature of cyberspace. Cybersecurity and privacy are not mutually exclusive.”
House Republicans have reintroduced CISPA, and have not changed any of those flaws. To help force a complete rewrite of this cybersecurity bill, the White House should issue another veto threat, making clear its continued opposition to this bill.
Please join with Daily Kos and Demand Progress by sending an email to President Obama, urging him to reiterate his opposition to this bill. (Email is editable) -
Tell the Senate to stand up for voting rights
The Supreme Court may be on the verge of undoing over four decades of voter protection efforts that have led to increased access to the polls and strengthened civil rights in our country.
If the conservative bloc of the Supreme Court, led by Antonin Scalia, strikes down key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, then we need our senators to immediately restore equality and fairness to the voting system by introducing and passing corrective legislation.
Please join with Daily Kos and our partners at EMILY’s List as we petition the Senate to stand up for expanded voting rights. EMILY's List will deliver the signatures through Senator Amy Klobuchar and the Democratic women in the Senate standing up for voting rights. -
Become a co-sponsor of the Back to Work Budget
America faces a jobs crisis. Our bridges, schools, and sewer systems are crumbling. Republicans are pushing more cuts--but we need a budget that invests in the future, creates jobs, and makes corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus’ Back to Work Budget does all those things. This is the kind of progressive vision for the economy we want to see from Democrats.
Please join with Daily Kos and Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-chair Rep. Keith Ellison by signing the petition below and becoming a citizen co-sponsor of the Back to Work Budget. -
Tell the FDIC to increase transparency on bank settlements
Recently, through a Freedom of Information Act request the LA Times obtained over 1,600 pages of settlements with major banks and other actors between the years of 2007-2012 that had been kept out of the public eye by non-disclosure agreements negotiated into the settlements. One of the most notable being a $54 million settlement from Deutsche Bank over loans that contributed to a California bank failure.
These agreements not only keep vital information from the public that informs their decision and shames bad actors, it also violates the spirit of the laws instituted after the S&L crisis of the 1980-90’s, which instituted a ban on secret settlements.
Sign the petition urging the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to institute and abide by a policy banning non-disclosure agreements of any type in all future settlements to increase transparency and shame bad actors in the banking industry.

Tell the Senate to hold this vote
Senate Republicans beholden to Wall Street are blocking a vital vote from happening because they care more about protecting the wealthy than protecting the middle class. They will not allow Richard Cordray’s nomination as director to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau come to a yes-or-no, simple majority vote.
Cordray has been serving as Director of the CFPB for the past two years, doing great work to protect consumers from more Wall Street malfeasance. That’s why Republicans are stalling the nomination. They don’t have a problem with Cordray, they have a problem with an effective agency that protects Main Street over Wall Street and they want to neuter it. So they’re filibustering Cordray as a way to force changes to the agency–something no party has ever done before–instead of using the legislative process.
This misuse of the filibuster must not stand. Sign the petition urging the Senate to let Richard Cordray’s nomination for Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau go to a yes-or-no vote. -
Tell Congress you are tired of paying for Mark Zuckerberg's stuff
Despite Facebook reporting profits of over $1.1 billion in 2012, the company is expected to pay no federal or state income taxes. In fact, Facebook will receive net tax refunds totaling $429 million, because tax deductions on executive stock options can be written off as salary deductions.
This is a perfect example of how the deficit and spending cuts are driven by loopholes that allow corporations and wealthy Americans to get all the breaks.
Please join with Daily Kos and our partners at CREDO Action by signing the petition telling Congress it's time to end tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy. -
Tell Paul Ryan: Protect Medicare for seniors, not tax breaks for billionaires
Paul Ryan is back with another cruel and unreasonable plan to destroy Medicare. He’d rather force his voucher scheme on seniors than close loopholes in the tax code that let multi-billion dollar companies pay next to nothing in taxes.
We stood up and stopped him before. Let’s do it again.
Join with Daily Kos and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, tell Paul Ryan that voucherizing Medicare is not an option. -
Tell Republicans: Please give a damn about people, not White House tours
The sequester has gone into effect. This has caused hundreds of thousands of people to be furloughed, an end to tuition assistance for soldiers in the Army, reductions in vaccinations, border patrols, meat processing inspections, aid for low-income housing, Head Start programs for children and much, much more..
So what part of the sequester is the Republican National Committee most upset about, to the point where they are running a petition about it? The cancellation of White House tours.
Sign the petition telling the Republican National Committee to stop whining about tours and start giving a damn about the millions of people who have been seriously impacted by the sequester. We need to publicly embarrass them for their pettiness: -
Stop Rick Scott's massive corporate giveaway
Governor Rick Scott has spent the past two years making devastating cuts to critical services for middle class families. Now he plans to go even further by pushing through a bill this legislative session that will give big corporations another $141 million in tax breaks.
Florida cannot continue the practice of increasing corporate tax breaks and subsidies while slashing funding for education and neglecting the needs of the state's small businesses.
The good news is that we can stop this bill because it requires a two-thirds majority to pass.
Please sign the petition from Daily Kos and our partners at Florida Watch Action as we demand that the Florida legislature reject this $141 million corporate tax break. Florida Watch Action will deliver the signatures to Florida legislators. -
Tell the Senate: End subsidies to oil companies
While Washington, DC, is scrambling to reach a deal to avert a government shutdown at the end of March, we have a simple solution to help balance the budget: end subsidies to the oil industry, which would save at least $4 billion annually.
Please, join with Daily Kos and Environmental Action by sending an email to your senators demanding an end to oil subsidies in any budget deal. (Email is editable) -

Tell Congress to repeal the sequester
At a time when our economy is on an upward trend of recovery, implementing stringent austerity measures like the sequester that went into effect on March 1, is a bad idea that will slow economic growth. The sequester is expected to cost at least 750,000 jobs and cut numerous services including cuts to the National Weather Service, work study programs, the National Institute of Health will be scaling back research programs and grants to universities, cuts to public health–including 840,000 fewer vaccinations, cuts to EPA programs that monitor clean air and water, and cuts to meat inspection programs.
While the extent of these cuts won’t be felt immediately, the pain will grow with each passing day as more workers are cut or furloughed and more programs are reduced to mere skeletons. Let’s be clear–this does not have to happen; Republicans choose to keep tax cuts for the wealthy and corporate tax loopholes at the expense the everyone else.
Repeal the sequester that has gone into effect, before real pain is felt. Jobs and social services are being cut at a time when our economy needs to grow rather than retract. Email your member of Congress and tell them to repeal the sequester before real and permanent damage is done to our fragile, recovering economy.(Email is editable) -
Tell the Senate Judiciary Committee: It's time for universal background checks
Next week, the Senate Judiciary Committee is starting its hearings on gun control.
The first item on the table will be universal background checks. This isn’t some high ideal we can one day aspire to. It is a basic, fundamental step we can take right now.
Daily Kos is working with Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords’s group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, to make sure that our voices are heard. Please sign our petition in support of universal background checks. -
Tell Congress to scrap the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act
House Republicans have re-introduced the previously failed Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), including most of its original flaws. The bill still gives private companies complete immunity for sharing customer information with the government, including the military or the NSA, without removing personally identifiable information. That’s after industry groups told the House Intelligence Committee in new hearings that removing that information from the data they share would not be a burden on the companies. Protecting our privacy isn’t difficult, but the House Republicans don’t want to do it.
Please contact your member of Congress using the email below and tell them to scrap CISPA. (Email is editable)

Tell John Boehner: Remove Michele Bachmann from the House Intelligence Committee
Rep. Michele Bachmann has been peddling Islamophobic conspiracy theories about a top aide to Hillary Clinton helping the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrate the federal government, and has implied that President Obama is working to spread global Sharia law.
Someone like this should not hold a seat on a congressional committee that is entrusted with classified information. Join Daily Kos and our partners at People For the American Way as we call on House Speaker John Boehner to remove Michele Bachmann from the House Intelligence Committee. -
Stand against Ken Cuccinelli
As attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli supported LGBT discrimination and attacked climate science. The Washington Post called him "the most overtly partisan attorney general in Virginia's history" after he used his office to threaten women's health providers. He even thinks Justice Antonin Scalia is too liberal.
Now, he wants to be your governor.
Don't let that happen. Please, sign the petition from Daily Kos and Terry McAuliffe pledging to stop Ken Cuccinelli. -
Tell Congress to pass President Obama's proposed increase to the minimum wage
In his State of the Union address, the president called on Congress to declare "that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty, and raise the federal minimum wage to $9.00 an hour."
The minimum wage hasn’t gone up since 2009, and today, working full-time at minimum wage isn’t enough to put a family of two above the poverty line. What’s more, 47 percent of the people affected by an increase to $9 are already working full-time.
Please sign the petition urging Congress to raise the minimum wage to $9, and also tie it to inflation so that we don't keep having this fight every few years. -
Tell Macy's to dump Donald Trump
Donald Trump’s hairis at it again, bullying and intimidating Angelo Carusone, the organizer who started the “Dump Trump” campaign, by threatening to sue Carusone for at least $25 million unless he stops his campaign.
Carusone created the campaign urging Macy’s to sever business ties with Trump over his sexist and racially charged rhetoric that is in direct conflict with the Macy’s family-based brand and image. But it is perhaps even more galling that Trump is now attempting to use his wealth to intimidate and silence political protest that is covered under the First Amendment.
Sign our petition telling Macy’s it is indeed time to Dump Trump for attempting to stifle political speech and political protest against him. -

Tell Harry Reid: Re-open filibuster reform in light of continued Republican obstructionism
Since Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell compromised by agreeing to a watered-down version of filibuster reform, Senate Republicans are gleefully taking their obstructionism of President Obama's nominees to unprecedented heights.
Harry Reid stated that if Republicans continued to abuse the filibuster, he might re-open the process to change Senate rules.
Please sign our petition urging Harry Reid to re-open the process of filibuster reform in the Senate. We must remain vigilant and build the case for filibuster reform every time Republican obstructionism prevents the Senate from functioning as it should. -
Tell the FCC: Take the first step toward public Wi-Fi for all
The Federal Communications Commission is considering a proposal to open up a wider share of the high-quality wireless spectrum for public use. This would be an important first step toward making fast, free, public Wi-Fi available to everyone.
Predictably, the wireless industry doesn't like this idea, and would rather the FCC auction off more high-quality wireless spectrum to private carriers, and leave less open to public use. However, a lack of competition—from public or private sources—is one of the reasons why broadband service in the United States has become too slow, too costly, and entirely unavailable to many people.
Sign the petition from Daily Kos and Free Press urging the FCC to follow through on their proposal to make more high-quality wireless spectrum available for public use. We have a long way to go to get public Wi-Fi for all, but making sure that private carriers don't hog too much of the good spectrum is a key first step. -
Tell the FEC: Investigate alleged crimes committed by Michele Bachmann’s operatives
Peter Waldron, a former campaign staffer for Michele Bachmann, is alleging several illegal acts were executed by top-level members of the Bachmann campaign. Further, Waldron claims these high ranking staffers reported directly to Michele Bachmann, and that she did nothing to stop the activities.
Please sign our petition urging the Federal Election Commission to engage in a speedy and transparent investigation into these allegations. -
Don't cut Social Security benefits--increase them
While many pundits and politicians are talking about cutting Social Security, in real life declining 401(K) packages and home values mean more and more Americans won't have the savings they need for retirement. The answer? We must increase Social Security benefits.
This is both straightforward and popular. We can guarantee the solvency of Social Security for several more generations—and increase benefits—by doing away with the cap on Social Security taxes, which currently limit the amount wealthy Americans pay into the system. The vast majority of Americans think Social Security should be increased, and the wealthy should pay more in taxes to do it.
Further, there are already bills in Congress to make this happen: H.R. 649 from Rep. Ted Beutsch (D-FL), and S. 308 from Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK).
Please sign our petition to President Obama and congressional leaders calling for an expansion of Social Security benefits and the elimination of the cap on Social Security taxes which limits the amount wealthier Americans pay into the system. -
Don't cut Social Security benefits--increase them

Tell Congress: Enact universal background checks and limit high-capacity magazines
The next few months will be challenging and filled with many ups-and-downs, but Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords know if we stick together, we can overcome anything -- even an ideological fringe that has consistently used big money and influence to obstruct progress.
Please, join with Daily Kos, Gabby Giffords, Mark Kelly and their new organization, Americans for Responsible Solutions, by signing our petition calling on Congress to enact universal background checks for gun purchases and limit the availability of high-capacity magazines. -

Tell House Republicans to pass the Violence Against Women Act

Update: Victory! On February 28, House Republicans relented and allowed a vote on the expanded, bi-partisan version of the Violence Against Women Act. It passed the House overwhelmingly, and will be signed into law.
Thank you to everyone who took action. Please, click here to go to Daily Kos.
*******
The Violence Against Women Act provides critical resources to reduce and respond to violent crimes against women, including funding for police training to handle cases involving sexual assault. Since it became law in 1994, incidents of domestic violence against women have dropped by over 50 percent.
For the second time in two years, the Senate has passed an expanded, bipartisan reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. It will extend protections to many whose needs were previously not met by the law, including the LGBT community, Native Americans, and immigrants.
However, House Republicans have so far refused to reauthorize the expanded bill; in fact, they’re so obstructionist that they have allowed the entire law to lapse.
Please sign the petition from Daily Kos and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee urging House Republicans to protect all women by passing the Senate version of the expanded, bipartisan Violence Against Women Act. -
Urge Congress to overturn the Citizens United decision
The Citizens United vs. FEC Supreme Court decision overturned over a century of precedent and opened the floodgates for unlimited amounts of corporate money to flow into our political system.
Shockingly, the court came to this decision based on the notion that a corporation is legally a "person" entitled to First Amendment rights, and by equating a corporation's right to spend unlimited amounts of money influencing an election with our right to free speech. This has led to enormous campaign expenditures that are corrupting our political system. We must overturn this decision with a constitutional amendment.
Please, stand with Daily Kos and CREDO by signing our petition urging your members of Congress to pass a constitutional amendment overturning the Citizens United decision and ending corporate personhood.

Co-sign the letter to President Obama & congressional leaders opposing cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits
Because of the unwillingness of conservative Republicans to compromise, any fiscal showdown deal will likely require the support of members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus in order to pass the House of Representatives.
As such, leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus have developed a strategy to prevent cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in any deal. They are circulating a letter among their colleagues declaring their opposition to any benefit cuts to these vital programs, and looking to get enough co-signers to make it clear to both congressional leaders and President Obama that any deal containing benefit cuts will not pass the House.
Please join with Daily Kos and Progressive Congress by becoming a citizen co-sponsor of the letter declaring your opposition to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid cuts in any fiscal showdown deal. Progressive Congress, the non-profit foundation for the Congressional Progressive Caucus, will use your show of grassroots support to help get as many members of the House to sign this letter as possible, and to make our opposition to benefit cuts as clear as possible to both President Obama and congressional leaders. -
Tell Harry Reid: Re-open filibuster reform in light of continued Republican obstructionism
Just weeks after Democrats and Republicans reached agreement on a watered down version of filibuster reform, Senate Republicans are up to their old obstructionist tricks. More than 40 Republican senators have stated they will filibuster any nominee to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau unless Democrats agree to gut the CFPB's power to actually protect consumers.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid stated that if Republicans continued to abuse the filibuster, he might re-open the process to change Senate rules. Given this latest Republican move, Reid may need to re-open that process sooner rather than later.
Please sign our petition urging Harry Reid to re-open the process of filibuster reform in the Senate. We must remain vigilant and build the case for filibuster reform every time Republican obstructionism prevents the Senate from functioning as it should. -

Tell Gov. Rick Scott to accept funds for Medicare expansion in Florida
Florida Gov. Rick Scott has extremely good health insurance that requires him to pay less than $400 a year for family coverage.
However, Rick Scott isn't interested in sharing his sweet health insurance deal, or even anything close to it. In fact, he is refusing to help out some of the poorest citizens in his state by declining federal assistance that would expand Medicaid to as many as 900,000 uninsured Floridians.
Please sign our petition to Florida Gov. Rick Scott urging him to accept federal assistance to expand Medicaid to as many as 900,000 uninsured Floridians who may be eligible to access the program under the Affordable Care Act. -

Stop electoral college vote rigging by supporting a national popular vote
After suffering crushing defeats in the 2008 and 2012 elections, Republicans are looking to rig the electoral college so they win a majority, or nearly a majority, of electoral votes in several key swing states even when they lose the popular vote in those states. (Yes, really.)
While we need to fight against these specific plans right now, over the long run the only way to stop electoral vote rigging schemes is to start electing our presidents through a national popular vote.

Women are still paid less than men for doing the same work. The Paycheck Fairness Act, which was blocked by Senate Republicans in 2010 and 2012, has been reintroduced by U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD) and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), and would help enforce and strengthen equal pay laws.
The Paycheck Fairness Act builds upon the 1963 Equal Pay Act and the 2009 Lilly Ledbetter Act, aiming to close loopholes that have allowed the gender pay gap to remain.
Please, sign the petition to the 113th Congress urging them to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act so women can finally achieve pay parity.

Tell Harry Reid: Use only Democratic votes to pass "flipping the burden" filibuster reform
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has sent an ultimatum to Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, giving McConnell until Thursday to agree to a watered down filibuster reform package.
However, if McConnell does not agree to the watered down package of reforms, then Sen. Reid has threatened to pass a much stronger filibuster reform package, and to do so with only 51 Democratic votes. Further, according to the Washington Post, this stronger package would include one of our two primary demands—flipping the burden on filibusters to the minority party.
We need to let Senator Reid know that he would have our support if he decides to go that route.
Please sign our petition to Senate Majority Leader Reid, letting him know that you support him if McConnell's inaction forces him to pass the powerful "flipping the burden" filibuster reform with only Democratic votes. We will email the signatures to his office early tomorrow morning as the final decision is being made. -
Email your Democratic senators and demand real filibuster reform
As climax of the filibuster reform fight approaches, we must continue to push for real reform that includes a talking filibuster and/or changing the burden of the filibuster to 41 votes to continue a filibuster, instead of the current 60 votes required to overcome one.
Real, meaningful reform is necessary for a functioning Senate. Please send an email to your Democratic senator or senators urging them to pass real filibuster reform. (Email can be edited and personalized.) -
Nothing gets Republicans into more trouble than saying what they really think
Nothing gets Republicans into more trouble than saying what they really think. We all saw with Mitt Romney's "47%" comments, and numerous Republican statements on rape.
This is what we are trying to achieve with the talking filibuster—forcing Republicans to defend their extremist obstructionism in public, and watching their inevitable gaffes drag them down.
We only need Democratic votes to make this happen, but we only have until lunchtime on Tuesday to convince a few remaining Democratic senators that the era of silent Republican obstruction needs to end.
Please send a fax to your senator or senators, telling them to support making the filibuster a real talking filibuster, and to do so with only 51 votes. -
Tell the Senate: Pass the gun safety proposals outlined by President Obama
On January 16, President Obama took 23 executive actions on gun safety. However, the most important changes to improve gun safety can only come with congressional action.
Congressional action begins in the Senate, as Speaker John Boehner has indicated the Republican-controlled House won't do anything until the Democratic-controlled Senate passes a bill. So, let's get things rolling by pushing the Senate to pass a strong gun safety bill, thus putting huge pressure on the House to follow suit.
Please email or call your senators, demanding they support President Obama's proposals for improved gun safety: (Email can be edited and personalized. If / when you hear back from your senators, please click here to tell us what you heard.) -
Tell Congress: Pass the gun safety proposals outlined by President Obama
On January 16, President Obama announced he was signing 23 executive actions on gun safety. However, the most important changes to improve gun safety in America can only come with congressional action, including action from the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
As President Obama himself said, "this will not happen unless the American people demand it."
Please send an email to your member of the House of Representatives demanding s/he support President Obama's proposals for improved gun safety: (email can be edited and personalized) -
Thank Tennessee authorities for suspending this guy's gun permit
On Friday, January 11, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security suspended the handgun carry permit of James Yeager, CEO of a company called Tactical Response, because of threatening videos he posted to YouTube calling for armed rebellion in response to any executive order increasing gun control.
His trouble started after this video, where he states “IM GOING TO START KILLING PEOPLE!” Then, he published this video, where he tells us he’s "assembled an army."
Please, sign the petition thanking the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security for doing the right thing by suspending the handgun carry permit of James Yeager. -

Chuck Hagel needs to advance LGBT equality as Secretary of Defense
This week, President Barack Obama announced Senator Chuck Hagel as his nominee for Secretary of Defense. This creates some questions about how Sen. Hagel's confirmation would impact the state of LGBT equality in the military, given an apologetic, yet mixed record on LGBT issues.
As such, Sen. Hagel needs to say that, if confirmed, he will immediately extend equal opportunity and nondiscrimination policies to LGBT servicemembers, as well as extend all benefits available to married same-sex military couples and families.
Sign our petition urging Sen. Hagel to make this promise before a vote on his confirmation takes place: -
Mr. President: Mint the $1 trillion coin
There is a simple, safe and legal way to keep the United States from defaulting on its debt while giving exactly zero concessions to congressional Republicans: mint a $1 trillion coin.
Sign the petition asking President Obama to order the minting of a $1 trillion coin if congressional Republicans refuse to raise the national debt limit. As the debt ceiling approaches, we will deliver the signatures to the White House: -
Tell the Senate: Fix the filibuster
Today's filibuster doesn't require opponents of a bill to make their case on the Senate floor. Filibusters now require very little time or effort, which has led to widespread abuse by the conservative minority.
To fix this, we're working to create momentum behind a strong package of reforms championed by Sen. Jeff Merkley, including the "talking filibuster" which requires senators to speak on the Senate floor in order to continue debate and prevent a vote.
Unfortunately a bipartisan group of more conservative senators have announced a much weaker proposal (called the McCain/Levin proposal) that would not fix the Senate's dysfunction and could actually make it easier for the conservative minority to obstruct legislation.
Join with CREDO and Daily Kos by signing our petition rejecting the McCain/Levin proposal, and supporting real reform: -
Tell Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act
The Violence Against Women Act has helped curtail domestic violence and sexual assault by providing critical funding for police training since it was first passed in 1994.
However, in the 112th Congress, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives failed to reauthorize an expanded version of the Violence Against Women Act that passed the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support. As a result, women and police forces around the country now have reduced resources to deal with domestic violence and sexual assault.
Please sign the petition below urging the 113th Congress to reauthorize the expanded, bi-partisan version of the Violence Against Women Act. -
Tell Congress to pass Sandy relief without making others suffer
On January 15, the House of Representatives will vote on a $51 billion relief package for areas damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Many Republicans are insisting that any money for this bill be offset by cuts in other programs.
Sign the following petition telling all members of the House and Senate to not only pass disaster relief, but to do so without making cuts elsewhere: -
Only two more votes are needed to make the filibuster real
Democrats have 48 of the 50 senators they need to change the rules of the Senate and make the filibuster a real, talking filibuster.
The seven Democratic Senators who have not yet committed to reforming the filibuster in this way are Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein of California, Carl Levin of Michigan, Max Baucus of Montana, Jack Reed of Rhode Island, and Patrick Leahy of Vermont.
We need to change two of their minds in order to make the filibuster real. If you are represented by one or more of these senators, we need your help to make it happen.
Please send an email to your senator or senators who have not yet committed to making the filibuster a real, talking filibuster, and encourage them to make this commitment. (Email can be edited and personalized.) -
Tell Senate Democrats to oppose fake filibuster reform
After more than two years of working to reform the filibuster, Senate Democrats are on the verge of passing rules changes that would actually make it easier for Republicans to obstruct legislation.
An emerging bipartisan proposal, called McCain/Levin and backed by many Demcorats, would not require senators to continuously talk in order to maintain a filibuster. However, it would guarantee the minority party votes on two amendments for every bill. Thus, the minority party would now have a chance to insert poison pills into every piece of legislation—including legislation that has the support of 60 senators.
Send an email to your Democratic members of the Senate, telling them to oppose McCain/Levin and instead support the real, talking filibuster championed by Senators Jeff Merkley and Tom Udall. (Email can be edited and personalized.) -
Become a Citizen Co-Sponsor on the New Assault Weapons Ban
Enough is enough. Of the 11 deadliest shootings in American history, five have happened since 2007. The grieving families in Newtown and across the country deserve our deepest condolences, but also our determined action to end these atrocities.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) sponsored the original ban on assault weapons and high capacity ammunition back in 1994 -- which expired in 2004 -- and last weekend she announced new legislation to renew the ban. But she needs your help. She told us "As I survey the field, I know I will need your help as I mount this campaign. We need a mass movement that can make calls, write letters, and mobilize your fellow citizens at a moment’s notice if we’re going to win this battle."
Please join Daily Kos and our partners at the Courage Campaign by becoming a citizen co-sponsor of the new assault weapons ban. Add your name below, and we will deliver the signatures to Senator Feinstein and her allies in Congress. -
Tell the Senate: No cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits, and no tax cuts for the wealthy
Democrats just won big at the ballot box, with President Obama crushing Mitt Romney and Democrats winning more seats in both the House and Senate.
But Congress is headed for a major showdown over federal spending before the end of the year, and far too many Democrats and Republicans are part of a concerted push to put Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits on the chopping block.
Negotiations are already happening and Congress has only two weeks left in session, so your senators need to hear from you today.
Join with CREDO Action and Daily Kos by telling your senators to reject any deal that cuts Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits, or cuts taxes for the wealthiest Americans. -
Don't let Medicaid get bargained away
Right now, leaders from both parties are in Washington, DC trying to make a deal on taxes and spending before we hit the so-called fiscal cliff.
Cuts to Medicaid should not be part of the deal. Period.
Something has to give. We have to find more money somewhere, but we shouldn’t find it in the pockets of the middle class, elderly, or working families who can’t afford it.
Please join with Daily Kos and our partners at SEIU by signing the petition calling on Congress to leave Medicare out of any and all fiscal cliff budget negotiations. -
Tell Senate Democrats: Social Security cuts are not acceptable
Just last month, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said that "we are not going to mess with Social Security" in any fiscal showdown deal. Now more than ever, we need to hold Sen. Reid to his words.
Please, sign the petition urging Senate Democrats to oppose any Social Security benefits cuts during the fiscal cliff negotiations. We will deliver the signatures to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: -
President Obama: Don't cut Social Security
As part of the fiscal showdown negotiations, President Obama has proposed cutting Social Security for almost all current and future beneficiaries.
Social Security should not be a part of the negotiations. It does not contribute even $1 to the deficit, and according to even the most pessimistic projections it is 100% solvent for more than 20 years.
Send an email to the White House telling President Obama to immediately stop proposing any cuts to Social Security. -
Tell your senators: Fix the filibuster!
Dozens of major pieces of legislation, and too many nominations, have died in the Senate because one, single senator can stop it—regardless of whether the legislation or nominee has support from the majority of the Senate. A senator doesn't have to mount an impassioned, lengthy floor speech to tie up legislation. He doesn't have to round up supportive colleagues to help block action. No, all it takes is to stop legislation dead in its tracks is one quick call, and then everyone heads out to dinner.
That has to change. The filibuster must be an action that is taken seriously by senators who choose to use it. There are four easy rule changes that make using the filibuster a process that is not to be undertaken lightly and will require active participation and real work to keep it going.
Please send an email to your senators in support of making the filibuster a real, talking filibuster and requiring a minimum of 41 votes to keep the filibuster alive. -
Don't Republicans take disaster relief hostage
Last year, Republicans insisted that any increase in disaster aid spending should come from a radical 40% cut to funds for equipping and training first responders. Republicans nearly forced a government shutdown over disaster aid funding, and ultimately succeeded in making massive cuts to the program. They passed a $2.65 billion bill for the disaster relief fund when the average need for the average year is $12 billion.
Now, in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Republicans are poised to continue their opposition to disaster relief funding. The conservative advocacy group Club for Growth is urging Republican Senators to vote "No" and has issued a threat to Republican Senators that this vote will be included in the organizations 2013 congressional report used to inform conservative voters.
Please send an email telling your senators that federal disaster funding should not be held hostage to force funding cuts elsewhere: -

Former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel has emerged as the leading candidate to become Obama’s next Secretary of Defense and may be nominated as soon as this month, according to two people familiar with the matter.
Democratic presidents should stop buying into the Republican propaganda that Democrats can't be trusted with national defense. The president has many choices from his own party who would serve well in the job. He should pick one of them.

Tell the House to pass the expanded, bipartisan Violence Against Women Act
The Violence Against Women Act provides critical funding and training to curtail domestic violence, including funding for police training to handle cases involving sexual assault. Since this legislation became law in 1994, incidents of domestic violence against women have dropped by over 50 percent.
The Senate voted to reauthorize an expanded, bipartisan version of the Violence Against Women Act. It will extend protection to the LGBT community, undocumented immigrants and Native Americans. However, the House Republican version is unlikely to extend protections to all of these groups, especially members of the LGBT community.
Send an email to your member of the U.S. House of Representatives, telling him or her to pass the expanded, bipartisan Senate reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. -
Pass the Stand With Servicewomen Act
Not only must servicewomen who become pregnant from rape or incest pay for their own abortions, they can't have the procedure performed at a military health center unless they can prove they were raped.
Republicans can fix this by passing the Stand With Servicewomen Act, an amendment to the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act that gives military families the same access to abortion care that other federal employees receive. While the Stand with Servicewomen Act passed the Senate with bipartisan support, House Republicans have purposely omitted it in their version of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act.

Conservative lawmakers in the Ugandan Parliament are pushing a bill that would make being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender a crime that is punishable by life imprisonment, and even death.

Support new legislation to shorten voting lines, strengthen people’s ability to vote
Now that the election has ended, forward thinking lawmakers are beginning to propose legislation to address problems voters faced before and during election day.
In the House of Representatives, Rep. George Miller (D-CA) introduced the Streamlining and Improving Methods at Polling Locations and Early (SIMPLE) Voting Act, which would reduce wait times at the polls and mandate all states provide a minimum of 15 days of early voting in federal elections.
On the Senate side, Senators Mark Warner and Chris Coons have introduced the Fair, Accurate, Secure and Timely (FAST) Voting Act of 2012, which creates a competitive grant for states to pursue election reforms including mandated early voting, absentee voting, and ways to reduce waiting time at polling stations.

Make the filibuster a real filibuster
Too often, good ideas die in the Senate even when they have majority support because a single Senator can tie up the process and prevent an up-or-down vote. They can do this not by mounting an impassioned lengthy floor speech, but by making one quick call and then heading out to dinner.
If Senators want to filibuster, they should be required to stand on the floor and make their case to the American people with a real, talking filibuster.
Sign our petition in support of making the filibuster a real, talking filibuster. We'll deliver the signatures to the Senators who are leading the fight to reform Senate rules, so they can use your support to help make their case to their colleagues. -

Wisconsin employer threatens workers if they vote for President Obama
Mike White, chairman and owner of Milwaukee based Rite-Hite, sent the following email to employees about the upcoming presidential election:"[Employees] should understand the personal consequences to them of having our tax rates increase dramatically if President Obama is re-elected, forcing taxpayers to fund President Obama's future deficits and social programs (including Obamacare), which require bigger government."

Tell the Pennsylvania Department of State: Stop running misleading voter ID ads
Recently, a judge ruled that Pennsylvania voters will not have to show photo ID to vote in the November election. However, the Pennsylvania Department of State has barely edited the television ad they were running before the court ruling. The emphasis in the elections digest is down ballot races: Senate, House, governor, and sometimes even further into the weeds, like mayoral races and state legislative contests. We put it all in one email every weekday morning.

Mobilize voters in Pennsylvania
On October 2, the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania struck down parts of Pennsylvania's voter ID law, making photo identification unnecessary to cast a ballot in 2012. Poll workers can still ask for photo identification, but they must allow those without it to cast a regular ballot.
This is good news, but it is also confusing. This confusion could deter potential voters from casting a ballot this year, so it is imperative the public knows their legal rights. Please sign up to volunteer with Daily Kos and the National Urban League to mobilize and educate voters in Pennsylvania. You can take part, no matter where you live.
When you sign up, we will connect you to Pennsylvania organizers working with the National Urban League and Occupy the Vote. Those organizers will contact you with volunteer opportunities such as phone banking, canvassing, tabling, data entry, and providing transportation.

Demand an investigation of the mandatory and unpaid attendance of mine workers at a Romney campaign event
While in Beallsville, Ohio, on August 14th at a campaign stop, Mitt Romney could be seen on stage in front of a group of miners. The miners on that stage, who are also featured in Mitt's latest ad in Ohio, were required by Murray Energy Corporation management to attend this "mandatory and unpaid" campaign event that cost them 5 hours of pay and required them to be the backdrop for Mitt Romney's stump speech.
This coerced attendance could be in violation of labor law. Therefore, we are calling on the Department of Labor and the National Labor Relations board to investigate the incident that cost these mine workers a day of pay and required them to engage in political activity while on the job.
Sign the petition below and we will file it with the Department of Labor and the NLRB. -

We can win back the House of Representatives, too, but we need everyone to go all in. The $60,000,000 which safe or retiring Democratic incumbents have in their campaign bank accounts would be really helpful in overcoming Republican Super PAC money.
Please, join with Democracy for America and Daily Kos by sending an email to your Democratic member of Congress, urging him or her to give more to Democrats in competitive House races. If your Representative has already pledged to give more, thank him or her for doing so. -

Thank the Fraternal Order of Police for refusing to endorse Mitt Romney
After endorsing the Republican nominee for president in 2000, 2004, and 2008, The Fraternal Order of Police, the nation's largest law enforcement labor union, has declined to endorse Mitt Romney this year.
While the Fraternal Order of Police did not endorse President Obama either, given the union's recent pattern of endorsing Republicans for president, this is definitely a rebuke of Mitt Romney.
Please, sign the petition from Daily Kos and Working America thanking the national Fraternal Order of Police for not endorsing Mitt Romney for president. -

Update: NFL and referee's union reach tentative agreement
Early Thursday morning, the NFL and the referee's union announced that they reached a tentative deal. While the deal must still be ratified by the union membership on Friday and Saturday, the referees are returning to work tonight.
Thank you to everyone who took action. Click here to go to Daily Kos, or here to go to Workers' Voice. The original text of the petition action can be found below.
****
NFL management and owners, who brought in more than $8.3 billion in revenue last year, continue to lockout experienced, union referees in an attempt to make a few more bucks at the expense of the middle class. The result has been terrible calls, a decline in player safety, and a loss of credibility for the sport.
Join with Daily Kos and Workers' Voice by signing our petition calling on NFL management to end the lockout and return the real referees to the football field. -
Support striking Chicago teachers!
Faced with class sizes of 30-50 students, longer work hours and no raises, crumbling schools with temperatures over 90 degrees and no air conditioning, reduced health care benefits and up to 6,000 teachers potentially being fired in the next two years, public school teachers in Chicago went on strike today.
We need to show our support for these teachers as they fight for better schools, because the unelected Chicago Board of Education will do whatever it can to make the teachers look greedy.
Sign our petition in support of striking Chicago teachers. We will send them the signatures as they walk the picket line. -
Volunteer to fight against voter suppression in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania’s new voter ID law threatens to disenfranchise more than 750,000 voters who currently lack the proper state-issued IDs required to cast a ballot. These voters need to be informed about the new legal requirements and will need help getting to the DMV for IDs before the November election.
To make sure everyone can still vote, volunteers are needed to work with local non-profits and coalitions, including the National Urban League, NAACP, and the PA Voter ID Coalition run through the Committee of 70. At Daily Kos, we are helping out by signing up volunteers in the Philadelphia area and connecting them to the local coalitions.
When you sign the form below, you will receive an email with contact information for the local organizations working to make sure everyone can vote. Then, a local organizer will contact you to set up a time to volunteer that best fits your schedule. View a volunteer schedule from the PA voter ID coalition.
Typical volunteer opportunities include data entry, office volunteers, canvassing, working events, phone banking, transporting voters to get ID and to the polls.
Please do your part to ensure all Pennsylvanians can legally cast their ballot in the upcoming November election. -
Tell Ohio Republicans: Stop restricting access to early voting
Last week, a federal judge ruled that early, in-person voting must be available to all Ohio voters during the final three days before the election. This overturned a Republican law that had restricted early, in-person voting during the final three days only to active duty military personnel.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted—both Republicans—are now appealing this ruling to a higher court. In the hopes of swinging an election, they are abusing their public positions to reduce public access to the ballot box.
Sign the petition telling Ohio Republicans to drop their appeal, and stop trying to restrict public access to early, in-person voting. -

Pledge to vote against Proposition 32
Proposition 32 was written to look like an even-handed solution to "special interest" money in California politics. But it's not what it seems.
The initiative limits the ability of unions to engage in political activity, while creating special exemptions that allow corporations and billionaires to continue funneling unlimited amounts of money into secretive political front groups. That's why conservative multi-millionaires are funding the campaign to pass Proposition 32.
Fill out the form below to pledge to vote "No" on Proposition 32, and stand up to corporate control of our government. -
Mr. Mandel, Ohio voters want to know your answer
Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel has been slamming Senator Sherrod Brown for voting to approve the 2009 loan to the auto industry that helped save over 850,000 Ohio jobs, including calling the senator “un-American.”
When pressed for information by the Columbus Dispatch about what Josh Mandel would have done differently in that situation, Mr. Mandel avoided the question and the follow-up asking him to answer again. Mandel needs to be held accountable for his accusations and lack of answers before the November election.
Sign the petition below from Daily Kos and our partners at Fighting for Ohio Jobs urging Josh Mandel to answer the question he’s been avoiding and we’ll make sure his campaign gets the petition. -

Tell the NFL to stop attacking union workers
We've seen this tactic before from the NFL when it locked out its players just last year, only this time NFL owners and management have locked out the league's referees. With regular season play rapidly approaching, coaches, players, and fans want to see the seasoned, experienced officials back on the field for the safety of the players and the integrity of the game.
This dispute is much like any labor dispute when you take away the bright lights and cameras. The bosses want to end defined benefit pensions and replace it with a 401(k) for the workers, the referees are working more and more to keep up with the game while their pay doesn't keep up with their hours, and the owners are reaping enormous profits.
Sign the petition below to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL owners calling on them to end the practice of using scab referees and to negotiate in good faith a fair deal to bring back the league's experienced referees. -

Republicans blocking abortion access for military servicewomen who have been raped
Even as Republicans like Mitt Romney scramble to distance themselves from Rep. Todd Akin's offensive comments about rape victims, House Republicans continue to block abortion access for soldiers who become pregnant from rape.
While the Stand with Servicewomen Act passed the Senate Armed Services Committee with bipartisan support, House Republicans like Todd Akin purposely omitted it in their version of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act.
Tell House Republicans it's time they stopped blocking access to abortion care for servicewomen who become pregnant from rape. -
Good riddance, Cliff Stearns
You remember Rep. Cliff Stearns, don't you? He's the House Republican who launched an "investigation" into Planned Parenthood. Stearns had no actual evidence of wrongdoing, and he hasn't found any. Because there is nothing to find.
But it was that bogus investigation that Susan G. Komen for the Cure cited to justify terminating funding of Planned Parenthood's breast cancer screening program. That didn't work out well for Komen.
That’s the same Cliff Stearns who just lost his primary.
Now that Stearns has been fired by the voters in his district, he'll have a lot more free time to reflect on how, instead of leading a witch hunt of women's health care, he should have been focusing on those "Job Creation Solutions" he'd promised.
Sign our card to Cliff Stearns, asking him to use his upcoming free time to reflect on how a bogus investigation of Planned Parenthood couldn't even help him win a Republican primary. -
Tell Democrats to keep up the attacks
Some beltway pundits don't like it when Democrats and the Obama campaign hit Republicans with harsh, truthful attacks on things like Mitt Romney's finances and Paul Ryan's budget.
Well, too bad. Democrats are fighting back for once, and still haven't even approached the level of Republican attacks like Willie Horton or Swiftboat Veterans for Truth.

Make corporations get permission from shareholders to spend money on politics
In the Citizens United era, CEOs and executives of publicly-traded corporations will spend hundreds of millions on the 2012 elections. The Shareholder Protection Act helps curb the corporate agenda of these CEOs by empowering shareholders to vote on whether to spend company money on political campaigns.
Passing the Shareholder Protection Act is within the realm of legislative possibility. It already has 12 co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate, and 49 in the U.S. House.
Daily Kos and Public Citizen are building momentum to pass the Shareholder Protection Act by increasing the number of co-sponsors for the bill. Become a citizen co-sponsor of the Department of Justice investigation of the Pennsylvania voter ID law
The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a formal inquiry into new voter ID laws in Pennsylvania for possible violations of the Civil Rights Voting Act, including discrimination and disenfranchisement.
When state legislators passed the law, they claimed that less than 1% of the population lacked the necessary identification. Now, estimates are many times higher, it's closer to 20% in some places, like Philadelphia, which votes majority Democratic.
Sign the petition supporting the DOJ investigation, urging them to stop the voter ID law from disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania voters. -
Scratch the Cybersecurity Act
While the Cybersecurity Act is better on privacy and civil liberties than CISPA, the internet legislation which passed the House of Representatives, it's still not enough. Further, once the Cybersecurity Act passes the Senate, it will have to be merged with CISPA during conference committee negotiations. There is a real danger that in order to placate extremists in the House, the conference committee will strip out all of the provisions in the Cybersecurity Act which have strengthened privacy protections.
Send an email to your senators, telling them to vote "no" on the Cybersecurity Act. The vote is the week of July 30. -

What has every other presidential candidate done since Nixon that Romney won't do?
Mitt Romney made millions by investing money overseas, firing American workers, and outsourcing jobs. He stores his money in secretive, tax-free banks accounts in the Caymen Island and Switzerland. He has a shell corporation in Bermuda which he used to invest millions in a Chinese firm that focuses on shipping America jobs to China.
With revelations like these, it is astonishing that Mitt Romney has only released one year of his tax returns. This breaks the precedent of releasing multiple years of returns set by Romney's father in 1968, and followed by every major presidential candidate since then.
What else is Romney hiding? Sign the petition demanding that Mitt Romney release his tax returns to the public. We'll deliver every signature we gather directly to Romney's campaign HQ in Boston in front of the press. -
The GOP really knows how to kick people when they are down
House Republicans aren't happy with the $4.5 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that passed the Senate. Instead, they want to gut the program with additional cuts totaling over $16 billion. This would result in 2-3 million families losing assistance, resulting in a sharp rise of people going hungry around the country.

Thank President Obama for offering health care to the wildfire fighters
On June 30, President Obama presented his weekly address from the base of operations for wildfire fighters in Colorado. While there, he was moved by the bravery of the men and women fighting the wildfire and pledged to give them all the resources needed to fight the fire.
In keeping with that pledge, this week President Obama issued an order giving all seasonal federal firefighters the option to buy federal health care coverage, which was previously unavailable to many of the men and women risking life and limb to quell the fires.
Send President Obama an email thanking him for making health care a reality for the federal firefighters protecting the country: -
If unions need to get opt-ins, corporations should too
With Citizens United, the activist, conservative Supreme Court expanded corporate political power by ruling that corporations could spend unlimited amounts of unregulated money to buy elections. However, last month, that same conservative Supreme Court restricted the power of organized labor by placing new requirements on how unions can spend money on political activity.
According to a new ruling, unions must get opt-in permission from workers who are required to pay dues, but choose not to join the union, before those non-member dues can be used for political purposes. This ruling overturned well-settled precedent, and gave anti-labor forces a victory well beyond what they were even seeking in the case before the court.
In response, sign our petition asking Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to introduce legislation requiring corporations to get opt-in permission from shareholders in order to be allowed to use company resources for political purposes. -
Help boost American Indian voter registration and turnout
One million American Indians are not registered to vote. Indians have the lowest participation rate at the polls of any ethnic group.
The pan-tribal National Congress of American Indians seeks to change that this year and make the Indian turnout at the polls the largest ever. But that means they must first be registered.
The registration effort would be greatly enhanced if Indians could register to vote at Indian Health Service sites on reservations and in urban areas with large concentrations of Indians.
Please sign our petition urging Secretary of Health and Human Services to make IHS centers available for voter registration. -
Tell Congress: Pass legislation to give the Colorado firefighters health insurance
Shockingly, many of the firefighters currently battling wildfires in Colorado and around the country do not have health insurance because they are classified as seasonal, rather than permanent, federal employees.
Sign the petition to congressional leaders demanding they immediately pass legislation which would make all federal firefighters eligible for federal health insurance. -
Keep the pressure on Republicans to prevent student loan rates from rising
If Congress doesn't act, student loan rates double on July 1. According to President Obama, who is working to prevent the increase, "More than 7 million students will be hit with the equivalent of a $1,000 tax hike," yet "we've been stuck watching Congress play chicken with another deadline."
Republicans want to pay for the extension by cutting other services working people depend on. Democrats want to pay for it by closing a corporate tax loophole. If this isn't solved by July 1, rates will DOUBLE.
Tell Congress to keep student loan interest rates from doubling without cutting essential services Americans depend on. -

Michigan Republican: Say "no" to men and get a time out
You can't make this stuff up. In response to the recent uproar over Michigan Republicans banning state Rep. Lisa Brown from the House floor for using the word "vagina," Rep. Wayne Schmidt insisted she needed a "time out," not for saying "vagina," but for saying "no means no."

Thank President Obama for bringing young immigrants one step closer to the American Dream
The future for undocumented youth just got a little brighter. The Obama administration has announced a new policy that will stop the deportation of up to 800,000 young immigrants who came to America as children.
Instead of deportation, the Obama administration will grant these undocumented youth work permits so they have the opportunity to make permanent lives in the U.S., which for many is the only country they have ever known.
Send an email to President Obama thanking him for this new policy that supports, rather than deports, immigrant youth. (Email can be edited) -
Republicans ban Democrat for saying "vagina"
Michigan Republicans think it’s okay to legislate vaginas – but not talk about them. During a debate over one of the most restrictive anti-choice bills yet, Michigan state Rep. Lisa Brown read a letter from a voter that concluded, "Finally Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you are all so interested in my vagina, but no means no."

Whoa—government actually rules against credit card companies
It's a rare day in Washington, D.C. when banks and credit issuers don't get what they want, but it actually just happened.
Financial industry groups had opposed the creation of an online database of complaints filed against them by consumers because they claimed it would mislead the public about their reputations. However, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), just launched such a database anyway.
Please sign our petition thanking the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for protecting consumers from bad credit card practices. Daily Kos and OMB Watch will make sure the CFPB gets the signatures of support for the new policy. -
Stand up for raped servicewomen
Under current law, servicewomen who are raped and become pregnant are forced to pay for their own abortions because their health insurance does not cover them the way it does for civilians working for the government. Servicewomen also must seek an abortion provider outside military health centers unless an investigation proves the rape occurred. For servicewomen deployed in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, outside providers aren’t an option and investigations are both difficult and time consuming.
Sen. Jean Shaheen (D-NH) has introduced an amendment to the 2013 defense authorization act that would end these restrictions and require health insurance to cover abortions in cases of rape and incest. Unsurprisingly, her amendment faces opposition from House Republicans.
Sign our petition thanking Sen. Shaheen for standing up for servicewomen. We will send her the signatures so she can use them to help persuade her congressional colleagues to do the right thing. -

Don't be fooled by the name: "Stand for Children" is a national organization running state level campaigns in places like Oregon, Illinois, and most recently Massachusetts to remake public schools based on right-wing ideology.
Venture capitalists and corporate foundations, like Bain Capital and the Walton Family Foundation are funding this organization, whose CEO, Jonah Edelman, can be seen in this video stating the goal is "the reform of collective bargaining throughout the state" and admitting the strategy is to "jam this proposal down their throats."
Now, we have the opportunity to stop Stand for Children from implementing the same harmful legislation in Massachusetts that has been implemented elsewhere which sharply restricts job protections for teachers and pushes them to teach to the test.
Sign the petition below calling on Stand for Children to withdraw its ballot initiative. -
Tell the DNC to contribute to the Wisconsin recalls
Wisconsin Democrats say they aren't getting the help they need from the Democratic National Committee to counter the avalanche of Republican money supporting Scott Walker.
Wisconsin Democrats have asked the DNC to spend $500,000 on voter turnout efforts for the recall. Given that members of the Daily Kos community have contributed over $700,000 for the Wisconsin recall efforts, surely the DNC can spend $500,000.
Send an email to the DNC, encouraging them to give financial support to the recall efforts in Wisconsin:

Tell Jamie Dimon to resign from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York
Under the watch of CEO Jamie Dimon, J.P. Morgan Chase recently lost billions in dangerous trading practices similar to those that caused the 2008 financial meltdown. This once again illustrates the need for strong, enforceable financial reform.
The Federal Reserve is currently working on crafting and implementing some of the most important aspects of the 2010 financial reform bill. Unfortunately, Jamie Dimon is also a director at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, a position which he has used to become the leading voice against increased regulation of Wall Street.
There is no way Jamie Dimon should be a part of the ongoing reform process. Sign the petition calling on Jamie Dimon to resign from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. -
Stop the sale of Trayvon shooting targets
The silhouette on the paper target is faceless. But the hoodie, the Skittles and the iced tea leave nothing to the imagination. This is meant to be Travyon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old shot to death in February in Sanford, Florida.
Skittles brand candy is clearly depicted in the targets. The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, a division of Mars Inc., produces and markets Skittles. They could stop the sale of these targets by taking legal action against the Hiller Armament Company, which sells the targets online.
Stop the sale of these targets by signing our petition to The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company and Mars Inc. -
Congratulate Mesa Prep on their state title
On Thursday night, Mesa Prep won the Arizona charter school state baseball championship when their opponents in the title game, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, forfeited.
The reason for the forfeit? Mesa Prep's second baseman, 15-year old Paige Sultzbach, is a girl, and Our Lady of Sorrows is a fundamentalist religious school that doesn't allow boys and girls to engage in athletic competition against each other. So, rather than play against Paige, Our Lady of Sorrows forfeited the state championship.
But hey, their loss is Mesa Prep's gain. Please sign our petition congratulating Mesa Prep and Paige Sultzbach on their state championship. We'll email them the signatures. -
Tell the Senate: Repeal DOMA
Now that President Obama has come out in support of full marriage equality, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said that the Senate may hold a vote to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which unconstitutionally allows states to not recognize same sex marriages performed in other states.
Please send an email to your senators, asking them to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. -

Ask President Obama to accelerate troop withdrawal from Afghanistan
In 2001, Rep. Barbara Lee was the lone vote against the Authorization for Use of Military Force in Afghanistan.
Now she is circulating a letter among members of Congress asking President Obama to accelerate troop withdrawal from that country. The letter already has 75 co-sponsors in Congress, and she will deliver it to the president in advance of the upcoming NATO summit.
To strengthen her message, Rep. Lee is also looking for citizen co-sponsors.
Please, join with Congresswoman Barbara Lee by signing her letter asking President Obama to accelerate troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. -
Tell Congress to pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act
Currently, pregnant workers are covered under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which does not require employers to make accommodations for women's health considerations.
Democrats introduced the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which will strengthen and expand current provisions to ensure pregnant women can protect their health during pregnancy and keep their jobs.

Thank Viviette Applewhite, the 93-year-old fighting Republican voter suppression
Viviette Applewhite, a 93-year old Philadelphia grandmother, does not have a photo ID because her pocketbook was stolen. She hasn't been able to replace her identification because state officials can't find her birth certificate. So, under the new voter ID law passed by Pennsylvania Repbublicans, now she can't vote.
However, she is fighting back by becoming the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit filed by the ACLU to stop Pennsylvania's new voter ID law.
Sign the petition thanking Mrs. Applewhite for challenging Republican voter suppression laws. - Tell the Senate: Raise the Minimum Wage

Tell the Senate: Stop CISPA
The Senate is the next battleground over the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act(CISPA), which gives the intelligence community and private businesses free rein to delve into any citizen's everyday internet activity. The bill is expected to come up in the next few weeks.
CISPA allows companies and the government to bypass existing laws in order to monitor our communications, filter content, or potentially even shut down access to online services for undefined “cybersecurity" purposes. But what it doesn't do is provide any new protections for critical infrastructure systems, like electrical grids and water supplies. Some security that is!
CISPA has passed the House, it's up to the Senate to stop this bill from becoming law. Tell your Senators to oppose the House bill and any other bill that would gut existing privacy laws.
-
Don't be evil: Tell the Board of Directors at Google to oppose CISPA
Google lobbied in the House before it passed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), but won't say what it lobbied for, and now that it's passed the House they still won't tell us where they stand . This overly broad bill will allow government and private entities to share individual's internet based communications with little to no privacy protections or transparency under the guise of "cybersecurity."
Tell the Board of Directors at Google "Don't be evil." They should oppose CISPA and refuse to share loyal customers' private information with the government and other companies. -
Tell Pastor Sean Harris his apology is not accepted
During a recent sermon in support of a state constitutional amendment banning all types of domestic partnership except straight marriage, Pastor Sean Harris of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina, told parents to beat their children if they exhibit any transgender behavior:
"Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok? You are not going to act like that. You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male. And when your daughter starts acting too Butch you reign her in.”
Pastor Harris has since issued a statement he was "jesting" followed by a non-apology accusing others of misunderstanding him.
Use the form below to send Pastor Harris an email, telling him his apology is not accepted. (Email can be edited) -
Tell your senators: Pass the Paycheck Fairness Act
Women are still paid less than men for doing the same work. The Paycheck Fairness Act would help enforce and strengthen equal pay laws.
In 2010, as part of their war on both women and workers, Senate Republicans voted unanimously to block this bill. Now, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to bring this bill up for a vote again because it's time to end wage discrimination and make sure women receive equal pay for equal work.
Please email your senators to tell them to support the Paycheck Fairness Act. -
Tell Walmart executives to resign for corrupt practices
Top Walmart executives were involved in bribing public officials in Mexico and then tried to cover up the scandal.
End the culture of corruption. Tell Walmart to remove the responsible executives and pursue an investigation. Sign the petition below calling on shareholders to hold Walmart accountable. -
Tell the House to pass the expanded, bipartisan Violence Against Women Act
Support Bernie's Progressive Budget

Tell House Republicans: Don't let student loan interest rates double
In 2007, Democrats and Republicans worked together to pass a law cutting interest rates on federal student loans from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent. That law will expire on July 1, 2012, causing interest rates to revert back to 6.8 percent.
Congress could keep this from happening, but now Republicans don't want to. Further, instead of taking action to keep interest rates from doubling, the Republican-controlled House Committee on Education and the Workforce just set up an email account dedicated to soliciting negative feedback the Obama administration's handling of federal student loan programs.
Don't let Republicans get away with this. Send a message to this new email account telling House Republicans that the real problem with federal student loan programs is how Republicans are doing nothing to keep interest rates from doubling. (Email can be edited) -
Send John Boehner a mutant shrimp picture
With mutant seafood devastating Gulf Coast fisheries, we are sending a picture of a mutant shrimp to Speaker John Boehner. We are including a petition telling Boehner to pass legislation mandating that fines paid by BP go toward the clean up and restoration of the Gulf Coast.
Please, add your name to the picture and the petition. The Senate has already passed such legislation with overwhelming, bipartisan support, and it is time for the House to do the same. -
Tell Congress: Stop CISPA
Update: CISPA passed the House in a surprise vote on Thursday evening. You can still take action below, but now the fight moves to the Senate. We will have more updates soon.

On the heels of the SOPA and PIPA comes a new debacle, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), which gives the intelligence community and private businesses free rein to delve into any citizen's everyday internet activity.
CISPA allows companies and the government to bypass existing laws in order to monitor our communications, filter content, or potentially even shut down access to online services for undefined “cybersecurity" purposes. Tell Congress to give all mothers the option to stay at home to raise children
The choice to stay home to raise your children should not just be for rich mothers like Ann Romney. That's why House Democrats are introducing legislation that would give all mothers, regardless of income, the option to stay at home to raise their children. It's called the Woman's Option to Raise Kids (WORK) Act.
Send an email to your member of Congress, telling him or her to support the WORK act, so every mother in America can make the same choice Ann Romney did. (email can be edited) -
Pass the Violence Against Women Act
The Democratic-controlled Senate is on the brink of reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act. However, the Republican-controlled House is stalling. There's no indication if Speaker John Boehner will even bring reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act up for a vote.
Sign the petition to Speaker John Boehner, telling him to bring the Violence Against Women Act up for a vote. We'll deliver the signatures to Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI), who is leading the charge to reauthorize the law in the House, and can use your show of grassroots support to help persuade her colleagues. -

Send Paul Ryan the fax
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) is perfectly willing to follow the dictates of the Catholic bishops on limiting women's access to reproductive health care. Funny how he ignores his church when it advises caring for the poor, ending war—and supporting President Obama's proposed federal budget instead of Ryan's own "starve the poor, help the wealthy" plan.
Perhaps the architect of the make-poor-people-pay plan hasn't read the recent guidance from the Conference of Catholic Bishops that "a just framework for future budgets cannot rely on disproportionate cuts in essential services to poor persons; it requires shared sacrifice by all, including raising adequate revenues, eliminating unnecessary military and other spending, and addressing the long-term costs of health insurance and retirement programs fairly."
Let's remind Paul Ryan of his church's advice.
Fill out the form below to fax Paul Ryan a copy of the statement from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops denouncing his budget proposal. -
Congress: Pass the Equal Rights Amendment
With conservatives escalating their war on women, we need an amendment to the Constitution explicitly guaranteeing equal rights for all citizens without regard to sex.
The Equal Rights Amendment, which narrowly failed ratification in the past, has been reintroduced in March 2013 in order to accomplish this goal. The public is overwhelmingly behind this–in April 2012, a Daily Kos and SEIU poll found that 91% of Americans believe that men and women should have equal rights affirmed by the Constitution.
Please, sign the petition telling Congress it is well past time to pass the Equal Rights Amendment. -

Don't let billionaires dump nuclear waste wherever they want
Billionaire Harold Simmons has spent nearly $1 million lobbying the Obama administration to allow nuclear waste dumps to accept expanded types of nuclear waste, including depleted uranium left over from weapons manufacturing and enrichment. Changing this rule would open up a market that would be worth billions, much of which would go to Simmons, whose company owns one of the two licensed low-level nuclear dumps in the United States that could accept this waste.
Simmons doesn't just depend on lobbying. He also is investing $36 million in Republican campaigns for Congress and the White House in 2012 so they can pass new laws and gut regulations, all of which make him even more money than the $10 billion he already has.
Tell the Nuclear Regulatory Commission not to make special rules for billionaires. We will send them your signatures and comments. -
Tell the USDA: Don't privatize meat inspection
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) currently inspects all chicken and turkey carcasses for things like bruises, bile and feces before they are sent to further processing.
However, the UDSA is now considering a pilot program that would eliminate that inspection and allow private poultry processing plants to do whatever they want. The USDA is holding a public commenting period on this proposed change through April 26.
Please, sign our petition opposing the privatization of poultry inspection. We will submit your signatures and comments to the USDA before the April 26 deadline. -

Too often, Democrats in Congress open negotiations with Republicans by proposing legislation that is already a compromise. Since Republicans start with hard-right proposals, the final product usually ends up being closer to what Republicans wanted.

Tell Congress what you think of nutrition cuts
Congress is looking to cut the Women, Infants and Children Farmers Market Nutrition Program by 30 percent for the 2013 budget. Tell your senators to end subsidies for Big Oil
Over the last 10 years, the Big 5 oil companies have made $1 trillion in profits, while retaining tens of billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies. Last year, these five companies—BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron and ConocoPhillips—reported $137 billion in profits.
These profits are obscene, but that we continue to subsidize them is even worse.

AMA: Oppose mandatory ultrasounds
State governments around the country are mandating unnecessary, unwanted, and invasive medical procedures on women who want to have an abortion. These unnecessary procedures are also expensive, and because they aren't medically necessary, will likely not be covered by insurance.
All doctors should be taking a stand against this. In fact, when doctors do take a stand, as the Pennsylvania Medical Society did, legislation mandating these procedures can be defeated.
Sign the petition to the American Medical Association. We will send them the signatures: -

Sign the petition supporting sexual regulation equality
Now that male legislators have decided the states should intrude between women and their physicians on matters of reproductive health, it seems only fair that women legislators should do the same for men.
In Ohio, state Sen. Nina Turner (D) has introduced SB 307, a bill that would require men seeking a prescription for erectile dysfunction drugs to see a sex therapist, receive a cardiac stress test and "get a notarized affidavit signed by a sexual partner affirming impotency."
In Illinois, state Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D) introduced an amendment to HB0786, a bill requiring ultrasounds before a woman can get an abortion, that would require men to watch an explicit video about the side-effects of erectile dysfunction drugs.
Also, Missouri state Rep. Stacey Newman (D) introduced HB 1853, a bill that would allow a man to obtain a vasectomy only when not doing so would protect him from serious injury or death.
Just because these women are joking doesn't mean they aren't serious. These bills highlight the ongoing attacks against women's reproductive rights and privacy.

Suspending ads on Limbaugh isn't enough
For three days, Rush Limbaugh used his radio show to viciously attack Sandra Fluke for daring to testify to a congressional committee that all women should receive basic health care. Pressure from hundreds of thousands of online activists spurred dozens of companies to stop advertising on Limbaugh's show.
However, several of those advertisers have only suspended their support, rather than dropping it permanently. Sign the petition to those advertisers telling them that suspending is not enough: -

Tell Steny Hoyer: No cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
According to media reports, Democratic House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer is working behind closed doors to force a vote on "a so-called grand bargain to raise taxes and restrain entitlement spending."
Hoyer's move, which appears to be in coordination with the Wall Street think tank Third Way, poses a danger to our social safety net. We cannot remain quiet while such a prominent member of Democratic Leadership appears to be working on a proposal which likely includes brutal cuts to Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security benefits.

Advertisers: pull your support for Limbaugh
Rush Limbaugh referred to a very bright, very brave young woman speaking out on the medical need for birth control as a "slut" and a "prostitute." He then doubled down, demanding that she post videos of her having sex online for his enjoyment.
As a result, more than 50 companies pulled the ads from Limbaugh's program, and nearly 100 are now looking to avoid right-wing talk radio altogether.

The Blunt Amendment is nothing more than an attempt by a handful of woman-hating men to rollback rights for women and workers. It is blatantly wrong, contrary to our founding principles of separation of church and state, and unbelievably bad health care policy.

Bravo, NPR!
Instead of focusing on reporting the truth, too many news outlets have decided their job is to tell the competing sides of any given story, no matter how unsupported by the facts one side may be.
In a positive move, National Public Radio recently issued new editorial guidelines rejecting this false balance. Disavowing the worst excesses of "he said, she said" journalism, NPR's new code of ethics states that "if the balance of evidence in a matter of controversy weighs heavily on one side, we acknowledge it in our reports." This is an important step to curing what has become an endemic plague of false fairness in American journalism.
Please, sign the petition below thanking NPR for this decision. We will send them the signatures: -

House Republicans recently held a hearing on contraception, and only invited men to testify. When Democrats invited a woman, Georgetown University Law Center student Sandra Fluke, Republicans refused to allow her to speak.

Sign the petition: Reduce poverty among restaurant workers
The statistics pile on top of each other in creating the picture of just how badly workers in the restaurant industry, and women in particular, have it:
—The median wage for restaurant workers in 2010 was $9.02, meaning that well over half of these workers earned less than the wage of $10.75 that a family of four needs to remain out of poverty.
—Almost half of all workers making below minimum wage are restaurant workers; 19 percent of restaurant workers earn less than minimum wage.
—Five of the 10 lowest-paying jobs in the country are tipped restaurant jobs.
—Women are 52 percent of all restaurant workers, but 66 percent of all tipped workers in restaurants and 71 percent of servers. That means that women are far more likely to face the uncertainty and poverty of tipped work.
—The typical full-time, year-round female server is paid just 68 percent of what her male counterpart is paid ($17,000 vs. $25,000 annually). This disparity is in part because women are concentrated in the kinds of restaurants that pay less, while men are more likely to work in fine dining restaurants.
Both Congress and the Department of Labor can take action to reduce the disgraceful treatment of restaurant workers. Fill out the form on the right to add your name to the petition. -
Rick Warren, please report to jail

Jobs without Congress
Let's face it: this Congress is extremely unlikely to pass anything meaningful to alleviate the national jobs crisis. As such, we are going have to come up with solutions that don't involve Congress.
If you either have, or have read about, any ways the executive branch can create jobs and otherwise stimulate the economy without any congressional action, please send them along using the form on the right.
These ideas are out there, and the White House is looking for them. If we can come up with a list of substantive ideas, we will submit them to the White House through their new We The People tool. It only takes 5,000 signatures on that tool for the White House to issue a formal review and response. The Daily Kos community can deliver 5,0000 signatures no problem.
Options for action without Congress might be limited, but they are still probably greater than convincing House Republicans to back effective public policy. Please, submit whatever ideas you have. -

After Wisconsin, what's next?
We came up short in Wisconsin last night. While we sought to retake the state Senate by defeating three incumbent Republican state senators in recall elections, we only picked up two seats.
Despite the loss, the reaction from our community has been far from entirely negative. After all, we made some gains while fighting for heroes, with heroes, and like heroes.
Let us know your feelings on last night's loss and where we should go from here. Just fill out the form on the right and submit your comment.

The sentence that wins the recalls
The six recalls against Republican state Senators in Wisconsin are on August 9. Democrats need to win three of those six in order to take control of the state Senate.
The latest polling shows Democrats way ahead in one, and narrowly ahead in three. We're winning, but it's super close.
For the final 120 hours of the elections, we're looking to run something called a Google Blast in the closest districts. With a Google Blast, anytime anyone in those districts goes online, they will see whatever message we want them to see. We did this in one of the districts back in March, and in one week our ad was viewed 4,764,678 times by a population of only 175,000 people.
If we do this right, it will win the Wisconsin recall elections. However, we need the best possible message for the ads, and due to space requirements that message can one be one sentence long.
This is tricky, so we need your help. Please, fill out the form on the right to let us know what one sentence message you think will win the Wisconsin recall campaign. We will review all of the suggestions, and share some of our favorites on the blog before making a final decision.

Recall Rick Snynder
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder can be recalled, and a campaign is underway to make it happen in 2011.
The first step is to have a recall petition approved by the Board of Elections in the county where Rick Snyder lives. FireRickSnyder.org succeeded in doing this on April 29th.
The next step is to gather the signatures of 806,522 Michigan residents on this recall petition and submit them to the Secretary of State's office by August 5th. If we succeed in doing that, then Rick Snyder will face a recall election this November. If Snyder loses the recall, he must immediately leave office, and a special election will be held to replace him.
With a job approval rating of only 30%, Snyder will be in a lot of trouble if we can gather enough signatures to get the recall election on the ballot.
FireRickSnyder.org is already collecting petition signatures. At Daily Kos, we are helping them find more volunteers so they can reach the goal of 806,522. Over 1,500 Michiganders have already signed up to help out. Fill out the form on the right and we'll connect you to the team of volunteers in your county.

Congratulations Mr. President!
Now bring the troops home.Last Sunday, months of painstaking intelligence work culminated in a helicopter assault by American military and intelligence operatives that ended in the death of Osama Bin Laden.
This stunning accomplishment is best described as a successful police operation. It was a "surgical" strike that relied on good intelligence and careful cooperation, not on brute military force.
Despite the sacrifice of our 100,000 troops in Afghanistan, this operation wasn't a success because of their boots on the ground. Rather, it provides the justification and opportunity for President Obama to bring them home.
Please, add your name to the petition on the right.

We Support You, Speaker Pelosi
The Blue Dogs are trying to oust Nancy Pelosi as House Democratic Leader. Apparently, they want to bring their special brand of magic--caving to Republicans, and then losing to them anyway--to the entire House Democratic caucus.
Sign the petition showing your support for Nancy Pelosi as House Democratic Leader. The Blue Dogs have Wall Street on their side, so it’s imperative we let Nancy Pelosi--and all House Democrats--know the grassroots are on her side.
At Daily Kos, we have an opportunity to deliver the signatures to her personally later this week, so she will know you've got her back.
