Tell Democrats: Don't start with compromise

Too often, Democrats in Congress open negotiations with Republicans by proposing legislation that is already a compromise. Since Republicans start with hard-right proposals, the final product usually ends up being closer to what Republicans wanted.

We need to change this dynamic. Tell Democratic leaders in Congress to open future budget negotiations with Republicans by proposing something further to the left than what they consider than acceptable compromise:

To Democratic leaders in the House and the Senate:

We, the undersigned, feel the legislative compromises which come out of Congress are too often much closer to the proposals which Republican started out with than those which Democratic opened with. The health care fight two years ago and the deficit reduction fight last year are good examples of this.

We need you to start opening negotiations with Republicans, from a stronger position. In future budget battles, please make stronger opening bids with Republicans then what you already consider to be an acceptable compromise.
