Don't cut Social Security benefits--increase them
The debate about Social Security needs to be turned on its head. While politicians are talking about cutting it, in real life declining 401(K) packages and home values mean more and more Americans won't have the savings they need for retirement. The answer? We must increase Social Security benefits.
This is both straightforward and popular. We can guarantee the solvency of Social Security for several more generations—and increase benefits—by doing away with the cap on Social Security taxes, which currently limit the amount wealthy Americans pay into the system. The vast majority of Americans think Social Security should be increased, and the wealthy should pay more in taxes to do it.
Let's shift the center of this debate by reminding our political leadership what the real mainstream position on Social Security is. Please sign our petition to President Obama and congressional leaders calling for an expansion of Social Security benefits and the elimination of the cap on Social Security taxes which limits the amount wealthier Americans pay into the system.
